    Role / Responsibilities

    We are seeking an experienced Computational Biologist/Bioinformatician to contribute to the Translational Genomics team at Jounce. This position will take ownership of our high-performance computing and bioinformatics pipelines and workflows, working closely with both bioinformatics analysts and wet lab scientists to increase team capabilities and efficiency.  In this role, you will be responsible for the creation of novel algorithms and bioinformatics approaches.  You will be accountable for implementation and maintenance of next generation sequencing (NGS) pipelines, working with a team to design experiments to assess new NGS or other multiplex platforms and approaches, upkeep of cancer immunotherapy databases and resources, and administration of bioinformatics cloud-based servers and systems.  The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of state-of-the-art NGS methods, the ability to both understand and explain nuances between algorithms, and the capacity to guide our team on pipeline tool selection and cloud computing strategy.

     

     

    Responsibilities will include:

    • Develop novel algorithms and implement, validate, and maintain shared pipelines for processing of NGS data (targeted/whole exome, RNA, single cell, TCR, and/or BCR sequencing) and downstream analyses (e.g. TMB, HLA typing, MSI status determination, differential transcript expression)
    • Keep our portfolio of bioinformatics tools cutting edge by evaluating and recommending pipeline algorithms based on statistical quality and performance metrics on real and simulated data sets
    • Lead efforts to further build out cloud-based bioinformatics high performance computing capabilities in partnership with our Research Informatics team
    • Administer our cloud-based LINUX server, including package maintenance, software compilation, and team support
    • Manage existing high-dimensional data resources and ingest new public and internal data sets for use by team members
    • Contribute to translational genomics strategy and participate in research team meetings, proactively suggest new ways to impact programs from discovery through the clinic
    • Use best practices for reproducible research and data stewardship

    Qualifications

     

    • A PhD in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, or a related field with 0-3 years of experience or a MS with 5+ years of relevant experience is required.
    • Extensive experience developing novel algorithms, implementing and managing NGS pipelines across a variety of different data types, and aiding in the design of experiments to validate different NGS and other multiplex platform technologies and pipelines
    • Deep understanding of next generation sequencing (NGS) methods and how upstream sample preparation and processing may affect sequencing results and their interpretation
    • Strong hands-on programming skills (R/Bioconductor, Python, SQL, Bash scripting or similar)
    • Proficiency in LINUX system administration, shell scripting, software compilation, and version control systems
    • Familiarity with Amazon Web Services (AWS) or similar cloud-computing services
    • Experience with machine learning, statistical modeling, and/or pathway/network analysis is beneficial
    • Demonstrated problem-solving and data analytical skills
    • Highly organized and motivated individual, able to work well in a group setting as well as independently in a fast-paced environment
    • Excellent communication skills and the ability to prioritize and deliver research in a fast-paced, milestone-driven environment.
